Worlds Best Attractions

Millions of travelers ranked their favorite landmarks, parks, museums, amusement and water parks around the world.

When most people think of Zermatt, they think of one thing: The Matterhorn. This ultimate Swiss icon looms over Zermatt, first drawing visitors here in the 1860s. The village of Zermatt, a Travelers' Choice Destination, is lovely and car-free, with old-fashioned brown chalets and winding alleys. (Don't worry, you don't have to walk everywhere—there are electric vehicles and horse-drawn cabs.) Skiing in the region often lasts through early summer, but when the weather's warmer, it's a great time to hike.

Barcelona feels a bit surreal - appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city's buildings. Stepping into Gaudí's Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast in this Travelers' Choice Destination by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

A town literally carved into the volcanic rock, Goreme is the gateway to the Goreme National Park, a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses spectacular 10th- and 11th-century cave churches. The park itself is known for its chimney rock formations and is very popular with backpackers. This Travelers' Choice Destination is also a great area to sample Turkish cuisine and wine.

The village cluster of Ubud, a Travelers' Choice Destination, is the ideal place to try a famed Balinese massage and soak up the ambiance of one of Asia's top spa destinations. Acupressure, reflexology, stretching and aromatherapy star in the island's distinctively firm massage treatments. Ubud is also the vivacious center of Bali's arts scene, home to a small treasure trove of museums and galleries. Monkey around at nearby nature reserve Monkey Forest Park, home to hundreds of mischievous long-tailed macaques. Don't miss the valley of tomb cloisters at Gunung Kawi.

Ireland travel guide

Cork is the "foodie capital of Ireland", Dublin is "sultry rather than sexy", Leitrim is a "well-kept secret" and Donegal is Ireland's "wild child", according to the latest reboot of the influential publisher's Ireland guide, due in shops Friday.
Of course, this being the title that introduced us to 'Temple Barf' and dubbed Dundalk a "charmless place", not everywhere is showered with superlatives.
Bundoran "has the feel of a tacky beach town", Lonely Planet says, while no attempt is made to gloss over Killarney's "manufactured tweeness".
Kenmare, by contrast, is hailed the "thinking man's Killarney... lacking the coach-tour crowds and "calculated Oirishness" of its neighbour.
Overall, however, the latest Lonely Planet guide to Ireland is notable for its positivity, depth of coverage (702 pages) and spot-on recognition of how far the country has come since the beginning of this eventful new millennium.
"As the nation continues to shed its conservative skin, it is growing increasingly comfortable with its multicultural, more socially liberated identity and its progressive presence on the global stage,” its writers state.
The guide has long recognised Ireland's stunning scenery and warm welcome, with the Wild Atlantic Way and Cavan Burren (along with Tayto Park, Teeling Distillery and Ireland's craft beer scene) among the new entries for 2016.

But it also highlights the "watershed" same-sex marriage referendum last May as the moment Ireland positioned itself as "a global trailblazer".
Lonely Planet has always been something of a looking glass, in which we have viewed ourselves with pride, amusement and, in some cases, downright anger.
In recent years, however, the publisher has skewed less controversial - naming Dublin among its Top 10 cities for 2016, ranking Hook Lighthouse among the world's 'flashiest' and announcing Bray's Harbour Bar as the best on the planet.
“Our new Ireland guide shows just how much the nation has going for it," says Lonely Planet's destination editor, James Smart.
"Ireland is a major player on the global scene and a must-see destination".
